In Collaboration with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

Date: 19 October 2025

HARARE – The Ministry of Skills Audit and Development, in collaboration with the Ministry of Higher and Tertiary Education, Innovation, Science and Technology Development, is hosting a high-level delegation from the United Republic of Tanzania’s Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (MoEST) from 19-25 October 2025.

The benchmarking visit represents deepening cooperation between Zimbabwe and Tanzania in technical and vocational education and training (TVET), skills development and innovation systems. The delegation will tour key institutions, exchange best practices and explore partnership opportunities in skills development aligned with both countries’ industrialisation agendas.

The week-long benchmarking visit will commence with tours of innovation and research institutions, beginning at the Harare Institute of Technology (HIT) where delegates will explore innovation labs and student project exhibitions showcasing locally-developed technological solutions. This will be followed by visits to the Scientific, Industrial and Research Development Centre (SIRDC) to observe applied research and technology transfer mechanisms and the University of Zimbabwe’s Innovation Hub to examine university-industry linkage models and research commercialisation strategies that translate academic work into practical economic applications.

Mid-week activities will focus on sustainability and quality assurance systems, with the delegation visiting the Geo Pomona Waste-to-Energy Plant to observe sustainable waste management solutions and circular economy principles in action. They will then proceed to the Zimbabwe Council for Higher Education (ZIMCHE) to discuss quality assurance and accreditation standards, qualifications frameworks and the regional harmonisation of educational standards across SADC member states, ensuring that both nations maintain high educational quality while facilitating regional integration.

The programme will emphasise practical TVET delivery through visits to three key institutions. In Marondera, delegates will tour Kushinga Phikelela Polytechnic College to observe TVET facilities, industry linkages, and student demonstrations of practical skills. The institutional visits will conclude at Kwekwe Polytechnic College, showcasing rural technical education delivery systems, student innovations and skills development initiatives across diverse geographic and economic settings.

Beyond the immediate knowledge exchange, this visit lays the foundation for sustained institutional partnerships between Zimbabwean and Tanzanian training institutions, including potential student and staff exchange programmes, joint research initiatives and collaborative curriculum development efforts. The Ministry of Skills Audit and Development views this engagement not as an isolated event but as the beginning of a long-term strategic partnership that will benefit both nations’ education systems and economies, with discussions around regional harmonisation of qualifications frameworks being particularly significant as they facilitate greater mobility of skilled workers within SADC and enhance the international competitiveness of graduates from both countries.

As Zimbabwe continues to position itself as a regional centre of excellence in technical and vocational education, partnerships with sister nations like Tanzania create opportunities for shared learning, resource optimisation and collective advancement toward the Africa envisioned in Agenda 2063. The outcomes of this visit will inform policy reforms, institutional improvements, and enhanced cooperation mechanisms that strengthen not only Zimbabwe-Tanzania bilateral relations but contribute to the broader SADC community’s capacity to deliver quality, relevant and accessible technical education to all its citizens.
