The Ministry of Skills Audit and Development ignited a spark of local ingenuity on Monday, hosting a highly successful Skills Fair Competition that drew a massive turnout and showcased the remarkable, untapped talent within the district.
The event, held under the banner of the National Skills Fair initiative, transformed into a vibrant marketplace of innovation, where practical solutions and creative enterprises took centre stage. The large and enthusiastic attendance underscored the community’s appetite for such platforms that celebrate skills beyond formal academic qualifications.
The fair was graced by the presence of the local Chief, accompanied by the Acting District Development Coordinator (DDC), councilors and a high-level delegation of stakeholders from various government ministries, signaling strong cross-governmental support for grassroots skills development.
The competition featured an impressive array of entries across five key categories:
STEM & Innovation: Attendees marveled at a Rig Mode device, an Electric Bed, and a Power-Boosting Inverter, demonstrating a strong grasp of practical engineering and electronics to solve everyday challenges.
Technical & Vocational Skills (TVET): The category featured functional machinery and crafts, including a locally fabricated Peanut Sheller, a Wood Carving Machine, and intricately designed Carpets and Mats, highlighting advanced artisanal and manufacturing capabilities.
Entrepreneurship: Leveraging local resources, innovators presented Baobab Coffee and a range of Skincare Products, showcasing an understanding of value addition and natural product development.
Crafts: High-quality Leather Shoes and designer Earrings displayed a refined level of craftsmanship and fashion sense with commercial potential.
Arts: A modern twist was added with Digital Poetry, merging literary art with technology and reflecting the evolving landscape of creative expression.
The event is a key part of the Ministry’s broader strategy to identify, validate, and empower skilled Zimbabweans operating in both the formal and informal sectors. By providing a platform for exposure, the fair connects local talent with potential markets, financiers, and pathways to certification.
