Ministry of Skills Audit and Development - latest news - From Canvas to Microphone: Nokutenda’s Inspiring Skills Journey

Seventeen-year-old Nokutenda Chipangura left a lasting impression at the Ministry of Skills Audit and Development stand during the Sahwira Career Guidance Expo, which ran from Thursday to Friday last week. During an engaging discussion with the team, Nokutenda confidently spoke about the importance of succeeding through practical skills in a rapidly changing world, demonstrating a maturity and understanding beyond her age.

While at the stand, she amazed attendees by producing detailed drawings within remarkably short periods of time, showcasing her exceptional artistic ability. She also presented a piece she had completed the previous night, further highlighting her dedication and passion for art. Nokutenda shared that she first discovered her drawing talent in Grade 5, where she would compete in drawing contests with boys in her class. Her gift continued to grow, and in Form One, her mother’s employer recognized her potential and assisted her in enrolling for professional drawing lessons at the National Gallery of Zimbabwe. Today, some of her artwork is proudly displayed at the institution, marking a significant milestone in her young career.

Beyond visual art, Nokutenda is also a gifted singer and songwriter. She captivated the MoSAD team by freestyling at the expo, revealing a powerful and emotive voice. As a recording artist, she already has four songs available on YouTube, all inspired by her vivid imagination and deep creativity. One of her notable tracks, titled “Rudo Rwamai,” is emotionally charged and resonates so deeply that listeners might assume it reflects a personal story of loss, particularly as it feels like a heartfelt dedication to a late mother. However, her songwriting is driven by imagination and empathy, allowing her to connect with audiences through compelling storytelling.

What makes Nokutenda’s journey even more remarkable is her ability to balance her artistic pursuits with her academic commitments. She is currently undertaking her A-Level studies at Hatcliffe High School, managing both her education and creative career with admirable discipline. In conversation, she demonstrated a clear understanding of the evolving world of work, acknowledging that success increasingly depends on practical skills and talent development. She also expressed heartfelt gratitude to her mother for being a constant pillar of support in nurturing her abilities.

Nokutenda Chipangura stands as a shining example of how young people can harness their diverse talents to create meaningful opportunities for themselves. Her story embodies the spirit of the Sahwira Careers Expo – empowering youth to recognise, refine and confidently pursue their skills in shaping their future.
